May 2025
Hi everyone,
Here we are at the 1st May which traditionally is considered the start of Summer. With the weather we’ve had recently, that’s easy to believe. May also brings more bank holidays which means class changes for Leroc Sussex. Please see below for the updated calendar for May.
Fact of the month: 1st May 1707 saw the formation of Great Britain from the union of England and Scotland (Wales having been joined with England since the early 1500’s).
May Freestyles
With so many freestyle events locally, I am trying to avoid clashes where possible. So there is a change to the published schedule for May.
Fridays have proved popular with dancers and also avoids many of the clashes on Saturdays, so this month we have two Friday Freestyles. The first is on Friday 9th May, and the second is on Friday 23rd May.
No special themes this month, just the usual great mix of dancers, music and venue to really make an evening of it.

Class Nights
As May has two Bank Holidays, and the Heene Community Centre doesn’t open on Bank Holidays, there are two Tuesday class nights. The hall is available at the normal times though, so the Tuesday classes will run as per a normal Monday night with a beginners lesson, intermediate lesson and freestyle time.

Floorcraft
This is a topic that isn’t really taught very much on class nights any more, but is still an important part of any type of dance. Whilst injuries in Leroc are thankfully rare, when they do occur they can be quite serious.
Dancing is such a personal pastime and we are taught to focus on our partner, the lead/follow, the music, styling etc. So it’s understandable that we sometimes forget that we are sharing a dance floor with numerous other dancers in a similar state of focus.
My top tips are:
- Be Observant: Constantly scan your surroundings. Notice other couples, their direction of movement, and their proximity to you. Look around to anticipate potential congestion or hazards.
- Respect Personal Space: Just like in any social setting, be mindful of the space you and your partner occupy. Avoid large, expansive moves when the floor is crowded.
- Communicate (Non-Verbally): Pay attention to your partner’s body language and any subtle cues that might indicate they’ve noticed something you haven’t.
- Apologise if Necessary: If a bump or near-miss occurs, a quick nod or “sorry” can go a long way in maintaining a positive atmosphere.
